Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam, is a profound spiritual journey that every Muslim strives to undertake at least once in their lifetime. This pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca is a time for reflection, repentance, and renewal of faith. To ensure a meaningful and successful Hajj, thorough preparation is essential. We pray that this guide can help provide you with the necessary preparations to ensure you benefit the most from your Hajj journey Inshallah.

Preparing for Hajj

  1. Making the Sincere Intention – Spiritual Preparation

    • Intention (Niyyah): The intention to perform Hajj should be sincere, solely for the sake of Allah SWT.
    • Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness: Engage in sincere repentance for past sins and seek forgiveness from those you may have wronged.
    • Strengthening Faith: Increase in worship such as prayer, reading/reciting the Quran, and other acts of devotion.
  2. Educational Preparation

    • Learning: Familiarize yourself with the requirements of Hajj, their significance, and the correct way to perform them. Books, online courses, and lectures from knowledgeable scholars can be valuable resources.
    • Understanding the Timeline: Know the sequence of the Hajj days, especially the main days (8th to 12th Dhul-Hijjah).
  3. Physical Preparation

    • Health Check-ups: Schedule medical check-ups and ensure you are in good health. Discuss any existing health conditions with your doctor.
    • Vaccinations: Obtain necessary vaccinations required by Saudi Arabian authorities.
    • Fitness: Engage in physical activities to build stamina, as Hajj involves considerable walking and physical exertion. To prepare for the journey, start walking certain distances every night.
  4. Financial Preparation

    • Saving Funds: Hajj is an obligation upon every Muslim if they are able to do so. Depending where you are in the world, Hajj can cost a considerable amount. Start saving well in advance to cover travel expenses, accommodation, and other costs. If you are able to do so.
    • Settling Debts: Clear any outstanding debts and financial obligations before leaving.
  1. Travel Preparation

    • Travel Arrangements: Book flights, accommodation, and any transportation needed in Saudi Arabia through a reliable Hajj operator.
    • Essential Documents: Ensure your passport is valid, and obtain the necessary Hajj visa. Keep copies of important documents.
    • Packing: For men who are preforming Hajj ensure to get the proper Ihram (two white, unstitched cloths for men).

Performing Hajj:

  1. Ihram: The State of Purity

    • Ihram: Enter the state of Ihram On 8th of Dhu’l-Hijjah, bathe yourself at one of the designated Miqat points by performing Ghusl (ritual purification), wearing Ihram garments, and making the intention for Hajj.
    • Talbiyah: Recite the Talbiyah prayer, expressing readiness for Hajj: He shall recite Talbiyah, saying: “Labbayka Allaahumma Labbayk, Labbayka La Shareeka Laka Labbayk. Innal Hamda Wan-ni’mata Laka Wal-Mulk, La Shareeka Lak” (Here I am at your service, o Allah, at Your service! At Your service! You have no partner! I am at Your service! Indeed, all praise and grace belong to You, and so does the supreme authority. You have no partner.
  1. Tawaf: Circumambulation of the Kaaba

    • Arrival in Mecca: Upon reaching Mecca, perform Tawaf by circling the Kaaba seven times in an anti-clockwise direction.
    • Praying at Maqam Ibrahim: Pray two Rak’ahs at the station of Ibrahim.
  2. Sa’i: Walking Between Safa and Marwah

    • Seven Times: Walk between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times, commemorating Hagar’s search for water for her son, Ishmael.
  3. Mina: The Tent City

    • 8th Dhul-Hijjah: Travel to Mina and spend the day in prayer and reflection.
  4. Arafat:

    • 9th Dhul-Hijjah: Stand at the plain of Arafat from noon to sunset, praying and seeking forgiveness. This is the most critical part of Hajj, as it is believed to be the day when Allah forgives the sins of the pilgrims and answers their prayers.

It is Sunnah for Muslims to fast on the first nine days of Dhul-Hijjah, because fasting is one of the best of deeds.

Abu Qatadah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about fasting on the day of ‘Arafat (9th of Dhul-Hijjah), whereupon he said: “It expiates the sins of the preceding year and the coming year”.  —Sahih Muslim 6:2603.

Pilgrims engage in earnest supplication, repentance, and deep reflection. The significance of this day is highlighted by the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) Farewell Sermon delivered during his final Hajj on the Mount of Mercy (Jabal al-Rahmah).

  1. Muzdalifah: After sunset, move to Muzdalifah, collect pebbles, and spend the night under the open sky.

  2. Ramy al-Jamarat: Stoning the Devil

    • 10th Dhul-Hijjah: Throw seven pebbles at the largest pillar (Jamrat al-Aqabah), symbolizing the rejection of evil.
  3. Qurbani: Sacrifice

    • Animal Sacrifice: Perform the sacrifice of an animal, commemorating Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son.
  4. Tawaf al-Ifadah: The Main Tawaf

    • Post-Sacrifice: Perform another Tawaf of the Kaaba, followed by Sa’i.
  5. Ramy al-Jamarat: Stoning Rituals

    • 11th-12th Dhul-Hijjah: Return to Mina and stone all three pillars each day.
  6. Farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wada)

    • Final Act: Perform a final Tawaf of the Kaaba before leaving Mecca.

Hajj is a transformative experience that requires extensive preparation and devotion. By preparing spiritually, physically, and logistically, pilgrims can ensure that their journey is smooth and their focus remains on the spiritual essence of Hajj. We ask Allah SWT to accept the Hajj of all those who have been invited to Allah SWT house and all the efforts rewarded.

In a world filled with distractions and challenges, nurturing the spiritual growth of our children is more important than ever. As parents and educators, it’s our Islamic responsibility to provide them with the tools and guidance they need to navigate life with good manners, wisdom, and inner strength. One of the most profound ways to achieve this is by teaching the Quran to our children. Teaching Quran can come in many forms, the most important form is proper recitation the Holy Quran, as this is a compulsory part of our religion. As Muslims we have 5 obligatory prayers per day and our prayers must be recited in the Arabic language. Therefore teaching our children the proper recitation becomes obligatory upon us.

Volume 6, Book 61, Number 545:

Narrated ‘Uthman:

The Prophet said, “The best among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.”

Here are some important reasons why introducing the Quran to children is not only beneficial but essential for their spiritual  development:

Comforting and Healing Their Soul: The Quran is not just a book; it’s a divine source of guidance and healing. Teaching it to kids from a young age instills in them a sense of peace, tranquility, and connection to something greater than themselves. The Quran can be a source of medicine for the mind. It helps them develop a strong moral compass, inner peace, and a profound sense of purpose in life. The Quran offers timeless wisdom and guidance on how to navigate life’s challenges with resilience and optimism. Through its teachings, children learn to maintain a positive outlook, even in the face of adversity.

Tip: Try playing it regularly within the home to help build a strong relationship between your children and the Quran. Ultimately, teaching the Quran to kids is about nurturing their spiritual growth and fostering a deep connection with their Creator.

“And indeed, we have made easy for the direction and direction, but is there anyone who will take advice?” (Surah Al-Qamar 54, verse 17)

Respect and Love for Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him): Learning about the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through the Quran fosters a deep respect and love for him. It helps children understand his exemplary character and strive to emulate his noble qualities in their own lives. Teaching the children about the Quranic revelations that came to the prophet Muhammad through the angel Jibreel, can also help children understand certain timelines in Islamic history.

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “None of you have faith until I am more beloved to him than his children, his father, and all of the people.

Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 15, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 44

Understanding our Religion: The Quran is the cornerstone of our Islamic faith and teachings. By teaching it to children, we empower them to understand the core principles and beliefs of Islam, laying a strong foundation for their spiritual journey. The Quran is the book of guidance for mankind, we will find all the answers to our questions within it.

Tip: When your child comes to you with a question, try to answer it with a verse in the Quran. This can be an excellent way to practice sourcing ayahs in the Quran.

Surah Ali Imran 3:7

It is He who has sent down to you, [O Muhammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise – they are the foundation of the Book – and others unspecific. As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allah . But those firm in knowledge say, “We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord.” And no one will be reminded except those of understanding.

Reap the Rewards: The Quran promises immense rewards for those who engage with its teachings and strive to live by its principles. Teaching it to kids lays the groundwork for their spiritual growth and paves the way for them to attain success in this life and the Hereafter.

“The best of you is (he) who learns and teaches the Holy Qur’an.”

(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 4, Hadith # 4739)

Understanding Islamic Culture and Values: The Quran is not just a religious text; it’s a rich repository of Islamic culture, history, and values. Teaching it to kids helps them develop a deep appreciation for their cultural heritage and instills in them the values of compassion, tolerance, and justice. It also provides and Increasing a Sense of Belonging: Through their engagement with the Quran, children develop a sense of belonging to the global Muslim community. They realize that they are part of something larger than themselves, strengthening their sense of identity and belonging.

Encouraging Critical Thinking: The Quran encourages reflection, contemplation, and critical thinking. By engaging with its verses, children develop analytical skills and a deeper understanding of complex concepts, fostering intellectual growth and maturity. When children read and try to understand the Quran it challenges them to think, reflect, and understand. It invites them to explore the deeper meanings behind its teachings and to seek knowledge. By engaging with the Quran, children develop the ability to think critically about moral, ethical, and existential issues.

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

The Prophet (ﷺ) embraced me and said, “O Allah! Teach him (the knowledge of) the Book (Qur’an).”

— Sahih al-Bukhari 7270

Improving Pronunciation: The Quran is the literal word of God and is the greatest blessing to humanity. Because it is held to the highest standard it must be recited correctly, to ensure there is no misunderstanding. Reciting the Quran correctly requires mastering the intricacies of Arabic pronunciation.

“…And recite the Quran with measured recitation.” (Quran, 73:4)

By learning to recite the Quran, children improve their pronunciation skills and develop a greater appreciation for the beauty of the Arabic language.

“Those to whom We have given the Book recite it with its true recital. They [are the ones who] believe in it. And whoever disbelieves in it – it is they who are the losers.” (Quran, 2: 121)

Ramadan Mubarak!

As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, parents around the world look for effective strategies to involve and prepare their children for this spiritually enriching time.

Ramadan is such a blessed month where families to come together to deepen their faith, and instill valuable traditions in their children.

Sanaa Schooling Online would like to provide families with some tips to help parents prepare their kids for Ramadan.

Educate About the Significance of Ramadan: Begin by explaining the significance of Ramadan to your children. Emphasize its importance as a month of fasting, reflection, and increased devotion to Allah.

Lead by Example: Children learn best by observing the behavior of their parents. Demonstrate your commitment to Ramadan by practicing acts of worship such as fasting, increased prayers, and acts of charity.

Explain the Purpose of Fasting: Children will often wonder why we fast and what is the purpose of fasting? You can begin to explain to your children that we fast during Ramadan to deepen our spirituality, practice self-discipline, and empathize with those less fortunate.

Create Ramadan Crafts and Activities: This will not only encourage a positive atmosphere by engaging in Ramadan-themed crafts and activities with your children, but this will also provide them activities to distract them during the day and make fasting more enjoyable. You can also create some traditions within your family by decorating your home with handmade decorations, create Ramadan journals, and organize storytelling sessions about the significance of the month.

Encourage Learning and Acts of Worship: You can encourage your children during the month of Ramadan to engage in acts of charity, they can volunteer, help around the house, or prepare food for those in need.

Acts of Worship: Encouraging small steps towards bigger goals are excellent for your children. Encourage them to read a certain amount of pages of Quran per day. If they are younger encourage listening and if you are already not registered in our school, take some time to review our courses.

Preparing children for Ramadan is not just about observing rituals; it’s about nurturing their spiritual growth and fostering a love for their faith.
